Things To Do at the The Appleton Retreat – Winter, Spring, Summer & Fall.
Hikes
If you are looking for something more challenging there are a variety of hikes in the area, notably, Maiden Cliffs, Fernald Neck, Megunticook, and Ocean View, as well as nearby Maine Trails, just a 10-minute drive from The Appleton Retreat.
Pettingill Stream
The Pettengill straem is part of a huge aquifer and is in a resource protected area on The Appleton Retreat property. It is totally unspoiled and beautiful. We have two kayaks located there to navigate the Stream, or just hang out and enjoy the wildlife. The Pettengill is south heading down the ridge. Check out the Trail Map and ask Peter or Toby for help with directions. (Go right when heading off down stream and keep going, after a bit of a portage it opens into a large wetland area with abundant wildlife.)
Skiing
Snowmobiling
The Appleton Retreat borders a snowmobile trail that leads to hundreds of miles of Maine Trails. We do not rent snowmobiles and do not know where you may. You are welcome to bring your 4-stoke sled with you to access the trails – Not the Appleton Retreat trails however. For more information go to http://mesnow.com
The Pond (or is a lake)
Newbert pond is wonderfully clean and most often totally secluded. It is approximately a 25-minute walk through the forested Nature Conservancy trail. Bring water shoes or sneakers as the bottom is rocky and a bit gooey, but incredibly excellent, AND DEEP once in! There are “noodles” (floaties) available in your retreat closet. The trail to the pond begins straight off the driveway at Braeburn. Follow the trail to Guinea Ridge Road, an ATV road, and go right. In a couple 100’ you will see the trail to the left which is clearly marked by the Nature Conservancy. Check out our Trail Map!
Build a Fire
Enjoy a fire on a cold crisp starry night…. or at anytime for that matter. You will find split seasoned wood near your retreat in a basket. The charge for the wood is $7.00 and includes kindling and fat wood to start the fire.)
BYO Marshmallows.
Water Activites
Stargazing
Golf
Golf? Yes! A mile away is the West Appleton Country Club. A very casual beautiful 9-hole course fun for all levels of play. Ray will rent clubs., or we can fix you up…… and the price for a round quite the deal.
Sauna and Hot Tub
The Sauna House and Wood Fired Cedar Hot Tub are located near Breeze & Braeburn. They are offered as an additional amenity and can be reserved upon arrival at an additional charge. They are positioned close to each other, with a view of Appleton Ridge and offer complete privacy.
The sauna is heated by a traditional wood fired stove and it takes approximately one hour to get to temperature. Guests may continue to feed the fire if they desire it to remain at a high temperature for an extended time. We will set the fire for you to light.
The wood fired cedar hot tub is lit in a firebox inside the tub to heat the water. It takes approximately 3-4 hours to get it up to temperature. Once at approximately 100 degrees it will retain heat for a few hours. There are no jets – it is a soaking tub! There are also no chemicals and the water is frequently changed. It can get too hot and then take a long time to cool down so once the water is around 90 degrees start shutting down the damper and paying attention. We try to get it just right for our guests….. There are biobricks close by to add if it is not hot enough.
All of the retreats with the exception of Breeze & Smitten have their own private therapeutic hot tubs….with jets.
Thank you for visiting us at The Appleton Retreat,
